Georg Ahrens (sculptor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Ahrens (born June 29, 1947 in Koblenz ), actually Georg Paul Maria Ahrens, is a German sculptor , medalist and university professor.

The great walker (1993), Kandel (Palatinate)

Live and act

Ahrens completed an apprenticeship as a stonemason and sculptor in the art workshops of Maria Laach Abbey with Father Theodor Bogler from 1964 to 1967 . He then studied sculpture from 1967 to 1973 at the Cologne factory schools with Kurt Schwippert and Hans Karl Burgeff . Ahrens has been working as a freelancer since 1970; he had his first studio in Ahrental Castle.

Several stays in China later led to ink work and woodcuts. Ahrens was Jürgen Weber's assistant at the TU Braunschweig from 1974 to 1977 . A teaching position from 1978 to 1981 led him to the Aachen University of Applied Sciences . In 1979, he was also an assistant at the RWTH Aachen at Elmar Hillebrand (until 1981). Teaching assignments at universities in Mainz (1981 to 1991) and Cologne (1982 to 1983) followed. In 1994 he was appointed visiting professor at the Art Academy Tianjin / China, which he followed annually until 2014. In 1998 Ahrens was visiting professor at the Teacher's University in Lin Fen / China.

In 1982 Ahrens received the sponsorship award of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and in 1990 and 1994 travel grants from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. In 1996 he won the Prize of the International Sculpture Symposium 96 Teda, in 1999 the Prize of the AKM, Koblenz (formerly the Hanns Sprung Prize ).

From 1999 to 2012 Ahrens was chairman of the Association of Fine Artists on the Middle Rhine (AKM). Ahrens lives and works in Cologne and Weibern (Eifel).

Angel No. 16 (1999). Top cheap
Angel No. 40 (2000). Waldthausen Castle

Ahrens has been dealing with the subject of " angels " since 1994 . In various places he created partly monumental angel sculptures, for example in Pirmasens, Freckenhorst, Oberbillig / Mosel, Luxembourg, at Waldthausen Castle / Mainz, in Dortmund, at Tilbeck Monastery / Münsterland, in Nordkirchen, Bad Neuenahr, Proto Roz / Slovenia and Trier. "The angel embodies - even without a church-religious background - in a very universal way the concentration of positive, immaterial forces." ( Gabriele Lohberg, Trier : 1999)

"Ahrens (...) forms the Udelfanger stone with its multi-layered surface into corporeal beings and concentrates in them the incorporeal spirituality of divine, ideal forces."

- Bärbel Schulte : Stones on the river , Verbandsgemeinde Konz

“Georg Ahrens works stones which, at best, give the shapeless a touch of expression and thus depict the bodiless rather than the perfect shape. (...) Georg Ahrens creates forms that are at best only hints and induce the viewer to think further and to give shape to what has been sensually grasped with his own imagination. "

- Michael Bollig : The courage to do what is essential, 2011
