The Obersauer Nature Park is a nature park in the north-west of Luxembourg . It was founded in 1999 as the first nature park in Luxembourg.

The Obersauer Nature Park is located in the north-west of Luxembourg on the border with Belgium and, with an area of 162 km² and around 5,500 inhabitants, covers the area of the four municipalities of Winseler , Bauschleiden , Stauseegemeinde and Esch-Sauer around the Obersauer Reservoir . The Obersauer Nature Park is a member of the network of nature parks in the Greater Region and directly borders on another member of the network, the Belgian Parc Naturel de la Haute-Sûre Forêt d'Anlier .
history
The idea of establishing a nature park in the region around the reservoir dates back to 1989. On September 27, 1993, the executive board of the SYCOPAN syndicate (Syndicat Intercommunal pour l'Aménagement et la Gestion du Parc Naturel Haute-Sûre) initiated the legal process for the creation of an Upper Sour Nature Park. A nature park law has existed in Luxembourg since August 1993 ("loi du 10 août 1993 relative aux parcs naturels"). On April 6, 1999, grand-ducal regulations decided to establish the nature park and a syndicate to manage it, initially for a period of 10 years. The board of the nature park consists of a partnership between the regional communities and various ministries. The Obersauer Nature Park is thus the older of the two Luxembourg nature parks. The member communities of Bauschleiden, Ell , Esch-Sauer, Heiderscheid , Stauseegemeinde, Neunhausen and Winseler were involved in the development of the concepts from the start. Community mergers in 2011 have reduced the member communities to currently four: Bauschleiden, Esch-Sauer, Stauseegemeinde and Winseler. In 2009 the duration of the nature park was extended by another 10 years.
Landscape and ecology
The landscape of the nature park is characterized by the 3.8 km² large Obersauer reservoir, which supplies around 70% of the entire population of Luxembourg with drinking water. The length of the shore of this artificial lake, which was created in the 1950s, is 42 km and is divided into different protection zones. The flora and fauna of this biotope can be explored on a natural history trip with a solar boat . Deeply cut valleys, damp meadows, wooded steep slopes and agricultural high plateaus are characteristics of the unspoilt low mountain range of the nature park communities. The Obersauer Nature Park is of great importance as a retreat for rare and endangered animals and plants. Several species protection projects are devoted to the rare little owl , the hazel grouse and the smooth snake , for example .

The nature park is a popular hiking area. The entire network of hiking trails extends over approximately 700 kilometers. You can explore the entire area of the Obersauer Nature Park on numerous themed and circular trails. In addition to the reservoir and the numerous opportunities for recreational activities such as swimming, boating, fishing and diving, the museums and discovery centers are also important for tourism. In the former cloth factory in Esch-Sauer , in addition to a museum on this topic, the nature park center is now also set up. The forest discovery center "Burfelt" of the nature and forest administration arouses interest in forest and nature. In Heiderscheid in the municipality of Esch-Sauer you can visit a candle factory and climb a high ropes course . The ruin of Esch-Sauer towers majestically over the village.
Projects
The nature park positions itself as the water region of Luxembourg and with its projects and events forms a bridge between culture, tourism and the region as an economic and living space. Numerous hiking trails have been developed and prepared for the visitor with maps and other visitor guidance. In the area of coordination and networking, the nature park strives for sustainable development in the Upper Sauer region. Sensitization for nature and its protection and valorization is the goal of experience-oriented environmental education. The important aspect of agriculture is taken into account with an agricultural advisory service that supports the businesses of the member communities in their work. With the production of diverse products from the reservoir region ("vum Séi") such as tea, herbs, cosmetic products or meat, the agricultural producers are involved in the marketing of regional specialties. With the second nature park in Luxembourg, the Our nature park in the north-east of the country, numerous joint projects are being implemented, such as the annual nature park calendar or a digital nature park guide. In addition, cross-border European cooperation, for example in the network of nature parks in the Greater Region, plays a major role.
