Georg Anton Boxberger (born May 16, 1679 in Hammelburg , † July 2, 1765 in Kissingen ) was a German pharmacist and ancestor of the important family of pharmacists in Bad Kissingen.

Life

He came from a long-established family in Hammelburg and learned the pharmacy trade from an uncle in Bamberg. During his apprenticeship and traveling years, he completed his knowledge in Bischofsheim, Würzburg, Straubing, Passau, Brno, Salzburg and Brixen.

Boxberger founded the first Kissingen pharmacy in 1710, which the city gladly allowed him, as spa guests repeatedly complained about the lack of a pharmacy. This pharmacy remained the only one in the spa town until 1868 and was family-owned until 1891.

Boxberger received citizenship in 1711, became a member of the city council in 1720 and even mayor for the first time in 1726. In 1737 he was the co-discoverer of the "Rákóczi mineral spring" in the Kissinger spa garden when the builder Balthasar Neumann moved the Franconian Hall, which was named after the Hungarian freedom fighter Franz II Rákóczi , who was very famous at the time. He analyzed their chemical composition, recognized the healing power of their water and thus laid another cornerstone for the importance of Kissingen in Europe. The Rákóczi spring is still the most famous medicinal spring in Bad Kissingen.

He was the progenitor of the important Kissingen pharmacist family. The former court pharmacy named after him still exists today. The “Kissinger Pills” once invented here are no longer produced in the Boxberger pharmacy, but are still offered today as “Silver Boxberger” in pharmacies around the world.
