Georg August Freiherr von Auenfels (born April 11, 1773 in Broszkowce in Croatia , † March 12, 1852 in Vienna ) was major general and knight of the Military Maria Theresa Order in the Austrian army.

Life

His childhood and youth are unknown. He was the son of the imperial and royal captain Sebastian August, who was ennobled with the title "von Auenfels" in 1801, and the brother of the later major general Stefan August von Auenfels. At 18, he joined in 1791 as Fahnencadet the infantry - regiment . Oross No. 31 a. After being transferred to the 58th Infantry Regiment, he became an ensign and later took part in the French campaigns in which he distinguished himself. There is no news of him in the following years. He was not mentioned again until 1824, when he was promoted to major and nine years later (1833) to lieutenant colonel . In 1838 he left the army with the right to a pension and the character of a colonel (retirement rank ).

In 1840 he took over the castle command from Maros-Vasarhely in today's Romania, which he had to give up when the revolution broke out in this city in 1848 and spread from there. Georg von Auenfels fled to Karlsburg Fortress and took command there in 1849. During the 144 days of insurgents' containment of this fortress, he distinguished himself again. His unwavering courage and brilliant evidence of valor were highlighted. He succeeded in supplying the insufficiently supplied fortress with the necessary supplies through cleverly planned and well executed outages. Even during several bombardments of the fortress by the insurgents, he was able to lead the population and occupation in such a way that the fortress remained under his control until it was relieved . On August 1, 1849, Russian troops under General Hasfort came to his aid, and they finally defeated the rebels in skirmishes near Mühlenbach and Reussmark.

He remained in command of the fortress even afterwards. As a reward for his persistent and skilful management of the enclosed fortress, he was awarded the Military Maria Theresa Order and the Order of the Iron Crown in 1850, while at the same time being elevated to the baron status, and was promoted to Major General in 1851. In that year he retired again, but could only enjoy his retirement for one more year.
