Georg Brandt (chemist)

Georg Brandt (born June 26, 1694 in Skinnskatteberg , † April 29, 1768 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish chemist who discovered and named the chemical element cobalt in bismuth ores.

Georg Brandt was appointed head of the chemical laboratory of the Bergskollegium in Stockholm in 1727 , and in 1730 he became head of the Royal Mint. Five years later, in 1735, he discovered and named the element cobalt. He published his findings on the composition of arsenic compounds in 1733. He also researched antimony , bismuth , mercury and zinc . He developed methods for the production of hydrochloric acid , nitric acid and sulfuric acid , which he published in 1741 and 1743. He was one of the first chemists to be completely opposed to alchemy , so he uncovered deceptive methods of making gold.
