Georg Christoph Eimmart the Elder (born December 6, 1603 in Königsberg in Franconia , † September 18, 1658 in Regensburg ) was a German painter and engraver of the Bavarian early Baroque .

Life and work

From 1620 Eimmart, the son of the painter Christoph David Eimmart , learned from the painter Michael Schramm in Haßfurt , where he then worked as a journeyman for a year. From 1622 he worked in Herrmann Wivernitz's workshop in Regensburg. In 1629 he acquired citizenship there and worked as a portraitist in the service of the city. In the second half of the 1630s he was appointed court painter to the prince-bishop; in this capacity he was known for his church still life. In 1641 he made drafts for the restoration of the church of the Karthaus Prüll near Regensburg. For the same church, Eimmart made three paintings for the Jesus cycle above the choir stalls in 1648/49. He made other paintings on the occasion of the coronation ceremony of Emperor Ferdinand III. for a triumphal arch and facade paintings on a city tower and a copy of the Birth of Mary by Albrecht Altdorfer on behalf of the city of Regensburg .

He is the father of Christian Eimmart , Georg Christoph Eimmart the Younger and Matthäus Eimmart , who all worked as painters.
