Georg Daltrop

Georg Daltrop (born April 24, 1932 in Burgsteinfurt ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Georg Daltrop studied classical archeology in Münster and was at 1,957 Max Wegner with the dissertation The city of Rome male Privatbildnisse Trajan and Hadrian time doctorate . Then he was a research assistant in Münster until 1959. In 1959 he moved to the Berlin Collection of Antiquities as a research assistant in the western part of the city . The activity was interrupted for a year when Daltrop was able to travel to the Mediterranean area in 1961/62 as holder of the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute . In 1963 he became head of the antiques department at the Museum of Art and Industry in Hamburg . Four years later he went to the Vatican Museums as the successor to Hermine Speier as Ispettore of the Monumenti Musei e Gallerie Pontificie Città del Vaticano . From 1972 to 1983 he was director of the Vatican Collections of Antiquities. After working briefly as a consultant in 1983, he became the first professor of classical archeology at the Catholic University of Eichstätt . In 1997 he retired and was succeeded by Gerhard Zimmer .

Daltrop was primarily concerned with Roman art . As an employee of the Vatican Museums, he mainly dealt with the museum's works of art, such as the Laocoon group and images of gods. In addition, he dealt with emperor and private portraits, but also cultural-historical topics such as hunting , such as the Calydonian boar hunt or ancient Roman mosaics with hunting representations. Daltrop also dealt with Greek art, such as the Athena of Myron . He has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute since 1969 and , after moving to Eichstätt , of the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia since 1971 .
