Life

Hornung was a trained mechanic and served as a fighter pilot during the First World War . Since then he has been a staunch communist and an active member of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) for the rest of his life . Hornung, he worked in Würzburg as a packer, was chairman of the soldiers' council, had a decisive influence on the establishment of the Würzburg local branch of the KPD on March 22, 1919 and was the last political leader of the KPD sub-district of Würzburg.

When Adolf Hitler made his first major campaign appearance in Würzburg on October 12, 1932 in what was then the Ludwigshalle, the former station building, Hornung and two comrades interrupted the power supply when Hitler arrived on the hall roof, so that the lighting and sound in the hall were completely out of order . After Hitler came to power , Hornung fled to Czechoslovakia and tried to organize the resistance from there. In Prague and in the border secretariat of Asch , he soon played a central role in the KPD's border work for northern Bavaria . Hornung provided the Czech intelligence service with information about military deployments and military construction work in Germany. From there he also supplied the KPD local group in Würzburg with illegal newspapers and brochures. When his residence permit expired on October 3, 1936, Hornung went to Spain .

During the Spanish Civil War , Hornung was the commander of the International Thälmann Brigade fighting against Francisco Franco . Hornung spent the years 1938 to 1941 in French internment camps and was extradited to the German Reich on July 26, 1941 when he did not agree to join the Foreign Legion .

In Germany, Hornung was charged with treason. On May 20, 1942, the trial against him at the People's Court in Berlin was supposed to begin. But on the afternoon of the previous day Hornung died at 3 p.m. in his cell of the Moabit correctional facility under circumstances that can no longer be determined.

On September 22nd, 2008 in Würzburg a stumbling stone was laid in front of the house on Sophienstrasse 9, where Georg "Schorsch" Hornung once lived .
