Georg Fuchs (biologist)
Georg Konstantin Fuchs (born November 29, 1945 in Ellwangen ) is a German microbiologist and university professor.
Scientific career
Fuchs studied biology at the University of Freiburg , where he passed the diploma examination in 1973. In 1975 he received his doctorate with Rudolf Thauer at the Ruhr University Bochum with a thesis on the enzymatic oxidation of carbon monoxide.
After a research stay in Madison / USA, he worked from 1976 to 1982 as a research assistant to Rudolf Thauer at the Laboratory for Microbiology at the Philipps University of Marburg , where he completed his habilitation in 1980 on the biological fixation of carbon.
In 1982 Fuchs was offered a full professorship at Ulm University , where he was also head of the newly established Applied Microbiology department. In 1994 he was appointed to the chair of microbiology at the Biological Institute II at the University of Freiburg as the successor to Gerhart Drews .
Main research areas
Fuchs' main research areas are central metabolic pathways and enzymes in bacteria, with several topics in the foreground of his scientific interest:
- biological CO 2 fixation , in which Fuchs was able to reveal new possibilities for how bacteria assimilate carbon dioxide
- Metabolic pathways in which the central metabolic compound, acetic acid, is oxidized and incorporated into cell components
- the metabolism of stable aromatic compounds, hydrocarbons and steroids, especially in the absence of oxygen.
