Georg Joseph Cöntgen , often Coentgen (born January 28, 1752 in Mainz , † January 28, 1799 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German engraver .

life and work

Georg Joseph Cöntgen was the son of the copper engraver Georg Hugo Cöntgen and the grandson of Anton Bartholomäus Cöntgen, who also worked as a copper engraver . All were resident and artistically active in Mainz. Georg Joseph Cöntgen, who worked not only as a copper engraver, but also as a painter , moved to Frankfurt am Main in the second half of the 18th century , where he founded a public drawing and painting academy in 1779.

He engraved many portraits, including that of the penultimate elector and archbishop of old Mainz, Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal . Sheets from his hand, with "GIC sc." is also found in an edition of Don Quixotte: Life and Deeds of the Wise Junker Don Quixote of Mancha, New Edition, from the original of Cervantes, together with the continuation of Avellaneda . In six volumes, by Friedrich Justin Bertuch .

Cöntgen's wife, Elisabeth, born Mund, was also a painter and engraver. She painted pieces of flowers, she was also very skilled at drawing. This artist died in 1778 at the age of 52.
