Georg Lejeune Dirichlet (born September 20, 1858 in Klein Bretschkehmen, Darkehmen district ; † July 3, 1920 in Königsberg i. Pr. ) Was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Dirichlet's father was the landowner and free-spirited member of the Prussian state parliament Walter Lejeune Dirichlet (1833–1887). He himself was the great-grandson of Moses Mendelssohn and nephew of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy .

From Michaelis 1867 to Easter 1877 he attended the Collegium Fridericianum . After graduation, he studied classical philology at the Universities of Königsberg , Bonn and Leipzig . On April 26, 1882, he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. After taking the exam for the higher subject on February 24, 1883, he came to the Kneiphöfische Gymnasium in Königsberg as a trial candidate on Easter 1883 . It elected him at Easter 1884 as a regular assistant teacher and hired him on August 8, 1885 as a full teacher. In 1904 he was appointed director of the old town high school in Königsberg. He was particularly concerned with the ability to translate (linguistics) . For him it was an excellent means of perfecting himself in the written and oral use of the mother tongue and at the same time better understanding its characteristics. He dealt with Seneca , Tiberius and Paul Güßfeldt . He was friends with the mayor of Königsberg, Siegfried Körte , whose obituary wrote in the Old Prussian monthly .

Elected to the city council in 1896, he was elected to the board of directors in 1898 and head of the Königsberg city council in 1914. Liberal by nature, he joined the German Fatherland Party . He lost his two sons in the First World War. He died after a cholecystectomy at the age of 62. His tombstone in Kaliningrad has been preserved.
