Georg in the middle

Georg Mittendrein (* 1950 in Vienna ) is an Austrian theater director and artistic director .

Life

He studied acting and directing at the Max Reinhardt Seminar and worked from 1975 to 1991 as an actor, theater director and director in Vienna. First he worked in the Theater der Jugend , then in the theater in the Künstlerhaus , before he founded a new theater on Spittelberg in the early 1980s , which he named after the anti-fascist Austrian poet Jura Soyfer and which he directed until 1988.

In 1991 Mittendrein went to Germany and became director of the Altenburg State Theater in Thuringia. Then artistic director of the Aachen Musical Center and from 1996 to 2000 he was the first artistic director of the United Theaters in Bolzano . In 2001 Mittendrein took over the general management of the Plauen-Zwickau theater . He directed the Clingenburg Festival and the Maintal Theater.

In addition to the theaters he directs, he has directed at the Vienna Theater in der Josefstadt, the Vienna Chamber Opera, Theater der Jugend, at the Halle Opera House, the Hanover State Theater, in Augsburg, Bamberg, Bautzen, Greifswald, Heidelberg, Kaiserslautern, Lübeck, Marburg, Pforzheim , Regensburg, at the Stralsunder Theater , in Villach and for the touring theaters Landgraf and Kempf, as well as and in Winnipeg / Canada.

From 2003 to 2006 he was employed as a director at the Halle Opera House and during this time he also directed the theaters in Regensburg , Augsburg and the Vienna Theater in der Josefstadt , as well as at the Landesbühne Hannover . After that he directed, among others, in the Clingenburg -Festspielen where a visitor record was achieved under his directorship in the first year, and the ETA Hoffmann Theater of the city of Bamberg . He founded the Maintal Theater , which plays on a floating stage in the Main near Laudenbach . In 2008 he was dismissed without notice at the Clingenburg Festival after disputes, including the re-establishment of the Maintal Theater at the same time. The dismissal was later declared inadmissible by the Würzburg labor court and compensation was awarded in the middle.

His productions have been seen on festivals and guest tours in Paris, East Berlin, London, Leeds, Oxford, Noridge and at the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen.

In the middle of it all, the musical Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story brought it to Germany for the first time in 1993 and staged it several times, including at the Clingenburg Festival in 2006 and 2007.

He also helped the musical “Das Beste Kleine Freudenhaus in Texas” to have its German premiere in Bozen and its German premiere in Zwickau.

To date, Mittendrein has staged around 150 productions, wrote scripts and radio plays, and directed television films.

From 2013 to summer 2018 Georg Mittendrein was managing director of Bruckmühle in Pregarten in Upper Austria. Mittendrein has been retired since 2018.

Theaters founded

Mittendrein once described himself as a “manic theater founder”, which is evidenced by the founding of the Schaubude Wien , the Wachau Summer Theater , the Salontheater Wien and the Maintal Theater . For example, he is also the founder and director of the Aist Festival.

During his term of office the general renovation of the ducal court theater in Altenburg fell while the business was still running and the new building of the "Nuovo teatro comunale di Bolzano"
