The Theater for Lower Saxony (TfN) is a theater that was created by the merger of the Hildesheim City Theater with the Hanover State Theater in September 2007.

The theater for Lower Saxony has two functions. Initially, the TfN is the city theater for the city and district of Hildesheim . In its second function, the TfN is the state stage and travels to more than 60 locations throughout Lower Saxony, with trips to other federal states as well.

The TfN is a three-branch theater and the fourth largest theater in Lower Saxony. It produces and shows plays , operas , operettas and musicals . In cooperation with the independent theater scene in Hildesheim, plays for children and young people are also produced and accompanied by theater pedagogy .

From the founding of the TfN until the 2019/20 season, Jörg Gade was director of the theater. Oliver Graf will take over the management from September 2020. General music director is Florian Ziemen. From the 2020/2021 season, the acting division will be headed by the dramaturge Cornelia Pook and the in-house director Ayla Yeginer.

Every year around 20 new productions are created, all of which also go on trips: operas, operettas, musicals, plays for adults and productions for children and young people. The TfN plays over 630 performances in a wide variety of locations every year. The venue in Hildesheim houses three different stages. The Great House is the stage for productions in the evening program and offers space for around 550 people. Small productions and cabaret events can be found in Foyer 1 (F1). The third stage is the so-called “theo” with 50 seats. Mostly children's and youth plays are played here. In addition, children's and youth plays are also played in classrooms and kindergartens.

Technical specifications

The large house of the venue in Hildesheim offers space for around 550 people and has a lowerable main stage that is 18 m wide and 12 m deep. The back stage is 9 m wide, 11 m deep and 6.5 m high. The orchestra room has a retractable orchestra podium, which also serves as a front stage and has an area of ​​40 m².

From May to November 2019, the theater hall was renovated with the replacement of the seating and the installation of a new air conditioning system.

The Theater für Niedersachsen is the first and only subsidized theater in Germany with its own musical company in the form of the TfN-MusicalCompany . It consists of 10 fully committed, trained musical performers and other guests. With the TfN-MusicalCompany German premieres and German-language premieres are brought to the stage. Another special feature is that the TfN plays in guest performances in places that are atypical for a theater. Churches, town halls and parks are also used.

The "Hildesheim Model 2.0" of the TfN offers a multi-layered program of theater groups, workshops, projects and special events. The TfN cooperates with the Theater Education Center Hildesheim (TPZ), the University of Applied Science and Art (HAWK), the University of Hildesheim , adult education centers and other institutions.
