history

Wolfgang Werner , founder of the previous facility, Werkstatt-Galerie Calenberg

At the beginning of the 20th century, the current theater still served as a lithographic printing shop , from which the pulley blocks still hang on the theater level. From there, the heavy stone printing plates were lowered into the former warehouse in the basement. Before the Second World War , the building housed a bowling alley. After the end of the war, it served as a warehouse for margarine.

In 1981, Wolfgang Werner founded the Werkstatt-Galerie Calenberg (WGC) and initially converted the premises to offer pottery , among other things .

In the course of time the use as a theater increased. In 1984 Wolfgang Werner founded the Calenberger Cabaret Weeks . Well-known cabaret artists, including those from abroad, such as Rüdiger Hoffmann , Helmut Ruge , Volker Pispers and Rainald Grebe appeared as guests of the WGC.

In 1993, director Erika-Maria Lehmann, the wife of the former opera house manager Hans-Peter Lehmann , chose the WGC as the stage for her newly created amateur theater group “Die Tribüne”.

In 1995 Klaus Urban produced his CD Das Blaue vom Himmel in the WGC , a live recording of the program “Lieder-Borstiges”.

In recent times, many newcomers, comedians and musicians have found their way onto the WGC stage, such as Heino Trusheim , Maxi Gstettenbauer and Volker Weininger .

On October 1, 2016, Wolfgang Werner handed over the management to Joachim Hieke. On November 14, 2016, the 300th anniversary of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's death, the former workshop Galerie Calenberg was renamed Leibniz Theater .
