history

HAWK University of Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen in Holzminden

The HAWK was founded in 1971 as the Hildesheim University of Applied Sciences and shortly thereafter renamed the Hildesheim / Holzminden University of Applied Sciences .

On the one hand, it emerged from the Royal Building Trade School Hildesheim (founded in 1900). The risen in earlier Staatsbauschule Holzminden dates back to the 1830/1831 by Friedrich Ludwig Haarmann founded Holzminden Baugewerkschule . The second line of tradition goes back to the municipal Höhere Töchterschule (1858) and the one-year women's school founded in 1909 at the state Goethegymnasium Hildesheim , the kindergarten teacher seminar founded there in 1919 and the youth leader seminar founded in 1928. In 1969 the Higher Technical School for Social Pedagogy was established and from this in 1971 the Social Pedagogy Department of the newly founded University of Applied Sciences.

University network with location Göttingen (from 1974)

In 1974 another location was opened in Göttingen. Since the 1990s, the Department of Social Education has maintained close cooperation with the Institute for Social and Organizational Education and the Department of Education and Social Sciences at the University of Hildesheim ; above and in the context of the “Nds. Doctoral programs for university graduates ”have been made possible since 2000 by means of a structured transition from a university of applied sciences to a doctorate.

University of Applied Science and Art (HAWK)

The university has been called the Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen University of Applied Sciences since 2000 and has been publicized since 2003 with the addition of the name HAWK - University of Applied Science and Art . As a result of the university optimization concept of the state government of Lower Saxony and the closure of the Dept. Buxtehude of the University of Applied Sciences Northeast Lower Saxony, which flows into the University of Lüneburg, in 2003, students there were administered by the HAWK (the 130-year history there has been closing university 21 since 2004 , a private public Partnership, to). With the amendment of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act of June 10, 2010, the “University of Applied Sciences” was renamed “University”. Since then it has been called "Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen University" with the addition of "HAWK University for Applied Science and Art".

In the HAWK plus area, since 2012 it has also been possible, among other things, to acquire credits for interdisciplinary courses in the "individual profile study". HAWK plus also includes the area of entrepreneurship (focus on start-ups and family businesses ) and the language center .

Plasma technology application center of the Fraunhofer IST

In July 2016, the HAWK as the only Lower Saxony College won ten colleges the last lap to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research nationwide organized (BMBF) Competition "Strong technical colleges - impulse for the region" with the project "Plasma technologies Südniedersachsen" . The BMBF is funding the project with 6.5 million euros up to 2020 . If the interim evaluation is positive, the funding will be extended for a further four years, so that a total of 13 million euros in research funds will be available for a period of eight years. The HAWK and the application center for plasma and photonics of the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films (IST) drive research for the region of southern Lower Saxony . The application center of the Fraunhofer IST in Göttingen receives almost half of all orders from the southern Lower Saxony region. The partnership "Plasma for Life" combines the potentials of laser and plasma technology in the fields of surface technology , radiation sources , fluid - processing , material processing and plasma medicine for process and product innovations to them by transfer- and implementation-oriented research for the life sciences to harness . In the field of plasma medicine, for example, the HAWK has developed a plasma comb that kills head lice when combing, completely painless for the user and without the use of insecticides . To do this, the device uses high voltage to generate a plasma that acts on the lice.

Health Campus Göttingen (from winter semester 2016)

In the winter semester 2016/17 the HAWK opened in cooperation with the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) the Health Campus Göttingen . Dual courses of study in nursing and therapeutic sciences are offered there. An expansion to include further Bachelor and Master courses is in preparation.

Conflict about Hildesheim Palestine Seminar (2016)

In August 2016, long-standing allegations against the HAWK became public that they had been offering an anti-Semitic and anti-Israel seminar in Hildesheim for ten years . Christiane Dienel , then President since 2011 , rejected the allegations as “completely unjustified” and referred to “quite influential circles” who wanted to prevent “different points of view” from being heard. After a round of talks at the invitation of Lower Saxony's Minister of Science Gabriele Heinen-Kljajic , it was decided to commission an expert opinion. The seminar “Social Situation of Young People in Palestine” has been removed from the range of lectures for prospective social workers. An expert opinion from the Center for Research on Antisemitism found that the event already had conceptually decisive deficiencies, did not meet scientific standards and conveyed an extremely one-sided picture. The teaching materials used were rated as critical or hostile to Israel. Some texts would work with anti-Semitic stereotypes or question Israel's right to exist . In addition, there was no text-critical handling. At the beginning of November 2016, the Senate of the HAWK decided that it should withdraw the recommendation to appoint Dienels as president for a second term of office to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science. Dienel withdrew from the leadership.

On November 22, 2016, the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK) commissioned the full-time Vice President / Chancellor Marc Hudy to take over the business as President from January 1, 2017. On the initiative of the Senate and supported by the MWK, the Quality Assurance project group took on the Teaching on December 22, 2016 under the direction of the lawyer Hudy . The group should develop the concept for quality assurance in teaching by the winter semester 2017/2018. On October 4, 2017, the Senate and University Council of the HAWK elected Marc Hudy as President of the university.
