The Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST , or Fraunhofer IST for short, is an institution of the Fraunhofer Society . The institute has three locations. It is based in Braunschweig . At the site of Göttingen is in cooperation with the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen Fraunhofer Application Center for Plasma and photonics. At the Dortmund location there is a cooperation with ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe as a branch office . Its activities can be assigned to applied research in engineering in the field of materials science . The Fraunhofer IST is a member of the Fraunhofer Group for Light & Surfaces and was a member of the Fraunhofer Group for Surface Technology and Photonics (VOP), to which five other Fraunhofer institutes belonged.

history

The institute was founded in 1990 and emerged from a Philips research laboratory in Hamburg . In 1994 the institute moved to Braunschweig in newly constructed buildings, which are located next to the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research (WKI).

Research and Development

The focus is on the following areas: surface technology , coatings , new layer systems, layer characterization and plasma technology . The institute is divided into two levels, business areas and technologies.

The business areas are:

  • Mechanical engineering, tools and vehicle technology
  • Aerospace
  • Energy and electronics
  • optics
  • Life Science and Environment

The central technology fields are:

  • Atmospheric pressure processes with a focus on electrochemical processes and atmospheric pressure plasma processes
  • Low-pressure plasma processes with a focus on magnetron sputtering, highly ionized plasmas and plasma-activated vapor deposition
  • Chemical vapor deposition with a focus on hot wire CVD
  • Center for tribological layers with a focus on friction reduction, wear and corrosion protection as well as micro and sensor technology
  • Application center for plasma and photonics with a focus on atmospheric pressure and mobile plasma sources as well as laser plasma technology

The extensive experience in layer production and application is supported by a corresponding layer and surface analysis, for which the most modern equipment is available, as well as by the simulation of the vacuum-based coating processes.

Cooperations

There are cooperation agreements with the TU Braunschweig .

Since 2005 the institute has been a member of the Competence Network Industrial Plasma Surface Technology (INPLAS) , which includes a number of internationally renowned companies as well as the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), the Research Center Dresden-Rossendorf (FZD) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Electron Beam and Plasma Technology (FEP), the University of Applied Science and Art (HAWK), the Institute for Surface Technology at the TU Braunschweig, the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Research and Technology (INP) and the Institute for Surface Technology in Mechanical Engineering (IOT) of RWTH Aachen .

The aim of the competence network is to secure and expand the leading global position of German companies and research institutions in plasma surface technology. In 2006 the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology accepted the INPLAS competence network into the “Club of the Best” networks in Germany.

The Fraunhofer IST is also a member of the Fraunhofer Group for Surface Technology and Photonics (VOP). In this group, the competencies of six Fraunhofer institutes are coordinated in order to guarantee a permanent, fast and flexible adaptation of the research work to the rapid technological progress in all application areas.

Infrastructure

Around 130 employees work at the institute, 60% of whom are scientists and engineers.

The operating budget in the 2014 financial year was 12.2 million euros. Around a quarter of these came from the basic funding, 90% of which is financed from federal funds and 10% from state funds. The income from contract research for the economy amounted to 5.2 million euros.

The facility has been headed by Günter Bräuer since 1999, who also heads the Institute for Surface Technology (IOT) at the TU Braunschweig .
