The Hornemann Institute , named after the from Hildesheim originating Africa travelers Friedrich Hornemann (1772-1801) is an agency of the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen . The institute was founded in 1998 as a project of the Expo 2000 , is internationally active and is based in Hildesheim.

The primary goal of the institute is to promote the worldwide transfer of research and knowledge in the field of conservation and restoration as well as the advanced training of restorers and preservationists , particularly through the use of modern media ( e-publication ). The Hornemann Institute has been a partner of ENCoRE (European Network for Conservation-Restoration Education) since 2001 and a member of the German Initiative for Network Information eV (DINI) since 2009 .

history

The Hornemann Institute was founded in 1998 and until 2003 was supported by the non-profit association for the preservation and preservation of world cultural heritage . The city ​​of Hildesheim , the University of Hildesheim and the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen joined forces to form this association on the occasion of the EXPO 2000 in Hanover . The institute mainly develops and uses e-learning , e-publication and events for the international exchange of experiences .

Electronic publishing

The institute's free online databases with university papers, conference reports, essays, films, posters and project documentation (including those from the German Federal Environmental Foundation DBU) offer timely publication and easy research. In cooperation with the Technical Information Library Hanover (TIB), the institute assigns digital object identifiers .

E-learning

The Hornemann Institute of the HAWK has been developing e-learning courses in the field of preserving cultural assets in cooperation with teachers from the HAWK restoration for more than twenty years. These are richly illustrated Internet courses with learning controls, a glossary, references and web links. All participants can clarify questions about the subject matter and practical implementation with the tutors via email or telephone. Upon successful completion, the participants receive a qualified certificate. Some courses can be credited towards studying at the Faculty of Building and Maintaining the HAWK in Hildesheim.

Series of publications

The series of publications ( ISSN  2193-1917 ) comprises 20 books, especially on the cultural history of the region, and is aimed at both experts and laypeople.

Virtual research environment, specialist wikis

As part of a DFG project, the institute has developed a German and an English technical wiki as well as a multilingual research environment on the subject of damage caused by salts.

Commitment to the region
