Georg Carl Moritz Propping (born October 20, 1837 in Oldenburg ; † April 15, 1920 ibid) was a German bank director and, as a politician, a member of the German Reichstag ( DFP ).

Life

Propping was the son of tobacco manufacturer Johannes Carl Friedrich Propping (1793–1872) and his wife Charlotte nee. King (1804-1880). From 1871 he was a member of the Oldenburg City Council and devoted himself particularly to the school system.

From 1876 he also worked for the Oldenburgische Spar- & Leih-Bank, so with interruptions as a member of the supervisory board and management board, from 1910 finally by being appointed chairman of the supervisory board.

From 1888 to 1918 he was a member of the magistrate and u. a. Long-time administrator of the Klävemannstift and member of the national association .

From 1869 to 1884 he was a member of the Oldenburg State Parliament , which elected him its Vice President in 1876. Between 1885 and 1887 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the German Liberal Party and the constituency of the city of Oldenburg. After the First World War he joined the newly founded German Democratic Party (DDP), in which he was no longer active as a public official due to increasing illnesses.

Above all, Propping's name is linked to the history of gymnastics in Oldenburg. He was popularly referred to as Oldenburg's gymnastics father and was the spokesperson for the Oldenburg Gymnastics Association, founded in 1859, from 1863 to 1919. He provided the gymnastics association with generous donations and was also chairman of the regional gymnastics organization in Oldenburger Turngau for 30 years .

Proppingstraße in Oldenburg is named after him.

Propping was married to Friederike geb. Sprenger (1841–1896), the daughter of Jeverschen pharmacist Anton Friedrich Wilhelm Sprenger and Friederike Wilhelmine born. Jaritz.
