Georg Weber (born March 28, 1910 in Augsburg ; † October 17, 1986 in Rain ) was a German entrepreneur in the gardening and agricultural trade , founder of the Dehner garden center chain .

Life

Georg Weber was the son of a railroad worker. He first learned the trade of hardware merchant and was granted power of attorney early on . In 1940 he married Albertine Dehner in Rain. In the business of his wife's parents, seeds were traded alongside food. Since many people were still growing their own vegetables in the post-war years, Weber turned his hobby of growing seeds into a business. At the age of 37 he founded the company “Dehner & Co - Samenzucht - Samengroßhandel” on August 1st, 1947 as a two-person business together with his wife Albertine (née Dehner). In 1948 the first branch was opened in Munich. With the rising standard of living, however, the kitchen gardens turned into ornamental gardens. Weber followed the trend and founded the plant and garden accessories division. Initially, he limited himself to mail order after catalog orders. Weber built the company into the largest pure garden center chain in Germany (later supplemented by zoo departments) and the largest employer in the city of Rain. In 1980 he had already created more than 500 jobs at the company's headquarters in Rain; in September 2006, Dehner had 5,300 employees, 1,100 of them at the company's headquarters. The other 4,200 employees are currently employed in around 100 branches in Germany and Austria .

Honors

On August 30, 1977 he was awarded the citizen's medal of the city of Rain and on February 5, 1980 he was awarded honorary citizenship of the city for the development of the Dehner company into the leading company in the industry in Germany and for the creation of 500 jobs up to this point (he was thus already the largest employer in 1980) and for the promotion of associations and social life.

Georg Weber was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Bavarian State Medal in 1979 for special services to the Bavarian economy .

On June 5, 2003 his widow Albertine Weber, nee Dehner, (died March 29, 2010) awarded the citizen medal of the city of Rain for her cultural commitment. His son Albert Weber (born September 1, 1947 in Augsburg) was also awarded honorary citizenship on October 17, 2007 and received numerous other awards from other sources.
