Company history

The company was founded on August 1, 1947 by Georg Weber and his wife Albertine, née Dehner, as a two-person business under the name "Dehner & Co - Samenzucht - Samengroßhandel " in Rain and initially began trading field seeds (clover and Grass). The impetus for this was that Georg Weber's parents-in-law also traded seeds as well as food and seed cultivation was Weber's hobby. Since many people still grew their own vegetables in the post-war years, Weber turned his hobby into a business at the age of 37. In 1949 the first branch was opened in Augsburg. However, as the standard of living increased, the kitchen gardens turned into ornamental gardens. Weber followed the trend and founded the plant and later garden accessories business. Initially, he limited himself to mail order after catalog orders, later garden centers were added, initially in southern Germany. Weber subsequently built up the company into the largest pure garden center chain in Germany (later supplemented by pet and zoo departments) and into the largest employer in the city of Rain.

In 1980 he had already created over 500 jobs at the company's headquarters in Rain; in November 2015, Dehner had 5,150 employees, 1,100 of them at the company's headquarters. The other 4,000 employees were employed in the 122 branches in Germany and Austria at the time. The Dehner Group's sales in 2017 totaled 760.2 million euros.
