Georg Wick

Georg Wick (born April 28, 1939 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian pathologist and gerontologist who researched autoimmune diseases and aging research .

Life

Wick studied medicine at the University of Vienna from 1958 , where he received his doctorate in 1964. In 1971 he completed his habilitation in "General and Experimental Pathology". From 1975 to 2007 he was Professor and Director of the Section for Experimental Pathophysiology and Immunology at the Medical University of Innsbruck . In 1991 he founded the Institute for Biomedical Aging Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Innsbruck, which he headed as director until 2003. From 2003 to 2005 he was President of the “Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research” (FWF). On December 14, 2005, Georg Wick was elected member ( matriculation number 7060 ) of the Leopoldina . At the end of 2007, Wick retired. From then until 2017, he headed the autoimmunity laboratory at the Biozentrum of the Medical University of Innsbruck. Wick is the editor of the journal Gerontology.

Georg Wick researched the development of autoimmune diseases. For the first time he was able to detect regulatory T cells - a group of immune cells in the thymus gland that prevent the development of autoimmune diseases in a healthy organism. He was also able to prove for the first time that in autoimmune diseases the genetically determined sensitivity of the respective target cells for the autoimmune attack is essential. He has also shown that the early stages of arteriosclerosis represent an autoimmune disease.
