Georg Wilhelm Timm ( Russian Георгий Вильгельм Тимм, Василий Фёдорович Тимм ) (born June 9 . Jul / 21st June  1820 greg. On the estate Sorgenfrei in Riga in the former Governorate of Livonia ; † 19th April 1895 in Berlin ) was a Baltic German painter , Graphic artist, engraver, draftsman and ceramicist.

Life

Georg Wilhelm Timm was the son of the Riga mayor Friedrich Gottlieb Timm (1779–1848) and his wife Emilie, b. by carpenter. His sister, the pianist Emilie Katharina Charlotte Timm (1821–1877) became the wife of Karl Pawlowitsch Brjullow .

Timm attended the grammar school founded by Albert Woldemar Hollander in Birkenruh near Wenden . He then studied painting from 1835 to 1839 at the St. Petersburg Art Academy under the battle painter Alexander Gottlob Sauerweid . In 1837 he was awarded the small silver medal for the painting "Ulanengruppe" and in 1839 with the large silver medal and the title of class artist for his achievements. From 1849 he worked as a draftsman, lithographer and illustrator .

Thanks to the imperial scholarship, Timm visited Paris in 1843, where he studied with Horace Vernet from 1844–1848 . In 1845 he visited Algeria with Vernet . Back in Russia in 1848, he took part in the Caucasus campaign as a battle painter from 1849–1850. In 1852 he accompanied Tsar Nicholas I on his trip to the health resort Haapsalu , Reval and Helsinki . During the siege of Sevastopol , he made numerous sketches, which he later processed into pictures. He became editor of an illustrated magazine that appeared three times a month from 1851 to 1862. In 1855 he was promoted to academician and professor of battle painting at the Petersburg Academy of Art.

In 1867 Timm moved to Berlin, where he dealt with blackboard and ceramic painting. In 1876 he was appointed professor at the Prussian Academy of the Arts and since then has worked at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin .

After his death, his widow gave his estate to the Riga City Art Museum and donated a scholarship in his name.
