Georg Witte

Georg Witte (* 1952 in Arnsberg ) is a German comparator , Slavist and translator.

Life

From 1971 to 1982 Witte studied German and Slavic studies in Munich , at the University of Cologne and at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In 1984 and 1985 he did a research stay at Moscow State University . He received his doctorate in 1987 from the University of Bochum and then worked there as a research assistant . The Habilitation took place in 1992. In 1994 he was appointed professor of East Slavic literatures at the Humboldt University of Berlin appointed. In 2004 he accepted a professorship at the Free University of Berlin . From 2013 until his retirement in 2019, Witte was Managing Director of the Peter Szondi Institute . Since 2019 he has been director of the Department of Philology at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg .

Witte is married and has two children.

Witte's main research interests include the literature of the Soviet Union , specifically experimental textual practices from the 1960s to 1980s. He makes various contributions to the relationship between literature and writing . Recently, there have been works on the aesthetics of things.

As a translator, he has published unofficial Russian poetry together with Sabine Hänsgen since the 1980s . He used the pseudonym Günter Hirt, Hänsgen called himself Sascha Wonders. He has translated poems by Vsevolod Nekrasov , Dmitri Prigow and Kirill Medvedev , among others .
