George Albert Sawatzky (born May 16, 1942 in Winkler (Manitoba) ) is a Canadian - Dutch solid state physicist .

Sawatzky studied physics at the University of Manitoba (Bachelor 1966) with a doctorate in 1969. From 1971 he was assistant professor and from 1979 professor at the University of Groningen , where he was director of the Center for Materials Science from 1986. Since 2001 he has been Professor of Physics and Chemistry at the University of British Columbia , but also Professor of Applied Physics and Solid State Physics in Groningen.

He deals theoretically and experimentally with strongly correlated electronic systems in solids such as high-temperature superconductors , magnetic nanostructured materials, materials for molecular electronics. Experimentally, he is particularly concerned with the use of synchrotron radiation sources for studying solid bodies.

In 1996 he received the Spinoza Prize , the highest Dutch science award . In 2003 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . He has been a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences since 1991 and of the Royal Society of Canada since 2002 . In 2008 he was elected a member (Fellow) of the Royal Society .
