George Barbier (Illustrator)
George Barbier (born October 10, 1882 in Nantes , † March 16, 1932 in Paris ) was a French painter, illustrator and fashion designer of Art Deco .
life and work
Little is known about the life of George Barbier. Although Barbier, who had studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris , held a vernissage in the Salon des Humoristes for the first time in 1910 under the pseudonym Édouard William, he was only shown the following year during another exhibition in the gallery Boutet de Monvel discovered. From 1912 until his death, Barbier exhibited in the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs .
He worked for famous magazines of the time such as Le Rire , La Gazette du bon ton (founded in 1912) and Journal des Dames et des Modes (also founded in 1912), where he was not only responsible for the drawings, but also commented on them. His stage costumes for the Ballets Russes became famous . He also designed bookplates and illustrated books and catalogs from Charles Baudelaire to Paul Verlaine . He is associated with the fashion houses of Paul Poiret , Jeanne Lanvin , Jeanne Paquin , Madeleine Vionnet , but also with the jeweler Cartier .
George Barbier designed numerous decorations and costumes for the theater and for the cinema. He died in Paris in 1932 at the height of his work.
