content
The Journal des Dames et des Modes was designed for connoisseurs, aesthetes and lovers of rare editions and tried to differentiate itself from existing magazines such as Femina and La Vie Parisienne , which were produced with high editions.
With an expensive layout , the social columns, poetic texts, colorful notes and fashion reports, the journal occupied the stage of the aesthetic, happy and optimistic society on the rise, called the Belle Époque .
- Christina Nuzzi: The Journal des Dames et des Modes was an expression of the finest Parisian elegance and illustrated by the most talented designers and illustrators of the time.
In each issue all the novelties of been carefully Fashion discussed and each issue contained one to five-color renditions of the current ideas of fashion designers that of graphic designers and artists have been created. These fashion plates with the heading Costumes Parisiens were hand-colored using the pochoir technique on etchings and made on handmade paper .
The artistic contributions were commissioned from some outstanding artists, but also from young and promising artists. George Barbier , who was known for the quality of his illustrations, was represented most frequently . Other artists were Léon Bakst , Roger Broders , Bernard Boutet de Monvel , Umberto Brunelleschi , H. Robert Dammy , Paul Iribe , Charles Martin , Fernand Siméon and Gerda Wegener . Essentially, fashion stories were portrayed on women, sometimes children or men.
For the text, the magazine had the collaboration of well-known writers and literary figures of the time, including Henri Duvernois , Marcel Boulenger , Anatole France , Paul Margueritte , Jean Cocteau and many more.
In retrospect, the magazine not only represented the Parisian culture of the time, but also reflected the fin de siècle .
