Live and act

George Clifford came from the English Clifford family , who settled in Amsterdam in the 17th century . George Clifford III was born the son of George Clifford II (1657–1727) and Anna Maria van Schuylenburch. He studied law and received a doctorate in law. He was married to Johanna Bouwens and had six children. Clifford was very wealthy as director of the Dutch East India Company . He was an avid plant and animal lover. His extensive private garden and his zoo on his seat on Hartekamp were known throughout Holland .

He met Carl von Linné in the house of Johannes Burman . Together with Burman, Linné visited Clifford in Hartekamp on August 13, 1735. Clifford was so impressed by Linnaeus that he hired him as his personal doctor and commissioned him to catalog his collection.

Linné began his work at Hartekamp on September 24th, 1735. A few months later he finished the little text Musa Cliffortiana , in which he dealt extensively with the plant genus Musa , the banana.

According to the garden catalog Viridarium Cliffortianum (1737), the complete list of the collections of George Clifford appeared in 1738 under the title Hortus Cliffortianus .
