George Davey Smith , also George Davey-Smith (born May 9, 1959 ) is an epidemiologist at the University of Bristol . It examines the causes and mitigation of health inequalities, the epidemiology of life courses, the effectiveness of health care and policy interventions, and the contributions of new genetic approaches to population health. Among other things, he works with Mendelian randomization .

Davey Smith studied at the College Queen's of the University of Oxford (Bachelor 1981) and Medicine at Jesus College of the University of Cambridge ( Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1984, MD 1991). He led a large-scale investigation into the 1985/1986 cardiovascular risk factors in Wales by (Welsh Heart Program) and acquired in 1988 at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine a (LSHTM) Master in Epidemiology . Other work dealt with diarrhea and HIV / AIDS in Nicaragua and India . In addition to his professorship in Bristol since 1994, he has also been a visiting professor at the University of Glasgow since 1996 and at the LSHTM since 1999.

Davey Smith has published more than 1000 scientific publications . He is one of the Highly Cited Researchers and was co-editor of the International Journal of Epidemiology from 2000 to 2016 . He is an external member of the National Academy of Medicine (USA, 2008), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2014), a member of the Royal Society (2019) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (2019). In 2001 he received an Investigator Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation . For 2017 he was awarded the Richard Doll Prize in Epidemiology .
