British House of Commons and Lords

1979 came Foulkes in the 1979 lower house elections for the first time to national elections. He won the direct mandate of his constituency South Ayrshire and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons . At the end of the legislature, the constituency was dissolved and Foulkes stood in the 1983 general election in the constituency of Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley . Again he won the direct mandate and defended it in the elections in 1987 , 1992 , 1997 and 2001 . Subsequently, the constituency was dissolved and Foulkes was raised to the nobility at the end of the legislature in 2005 as a life peer with the title Baron Foulkes of Cumnock , of Cumnock in East Ayrshire. Since then he has been a member of the House of Lords . At the 2005 general election Foulkes has not raced for more. Between 1997 and 2001, Foulkes held the post of Parliamentary Undersecretary for International Developments. From 2001 to 2002 he was Secretary of State for Scotland.

Scottish Parliament

In the 2007 Scottish general election , Foulkes ran for a seat in the Scottish Parliament . He did not run for election in a single constituency, but was ranked first on the Labor Party's regional electoral list for Lothian's electoral region . As a result of the election result, he moved as the only Labor politician for Lothians in the Scottish Parliament. At the end of the legislative period, he left parliament.

More activity and controversy

In 2005, Foulkes resigned as chairman of the Scottish football club Heart of Midlothian and referred to club owner Vladimir Romanov as a "dictator".

In 2008, Foulkes was criticized for his high financial demands as a result of his work in the House of Lords. He asked for around £ 55,000 for overnight stays in his own London apartment over a period of two years . In contrast, his demands on the Scottish Parliament were relatively minor. In a live interview to disclose the demands of all MPs and the following discussion in the population, Foulkes attacked the news anchor and accused the media of wanting to undermine democracy.

After Foulkes had accused the Scottish National Party (SNP) of racism against the English in 2007, the SNP leader Henry McLeish demanded an apology, which Foulkes refused.
