George Habasch
George Habasch ( Arabic جورج حبش Djordj Habash ; English spelling George Habash; French spelling Georges Habache; * August 2, 1926 in Lydda , Palestine ; † January 26, 2008 in Amman , Jordan ) was General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP)from 1968 to 2000.
Life
Habasch, the son of Greek Orthodox grain merchants, and his family were driven from their hometown after Lydda was captured by Israeli troops in the Palestinian War in 1948. Previously Habash had at the American University in Beirut , a medical school started, returned during the fighting but from Lebanon into its Palestinian homeland to serve as a medic. After resuming and finally completing his studies in 1951, with special training as a pediatrician , Habasch initially worked as a doctor in Palestinian refugee camps in Amman. He also became involved in 1952 he co-founded movement of Arab nationalists (ANM, Arab Nationalists' Movement, Arab.حركة القوميين العرب Harakat al-Qaumiyyīn al- c Arab ), whopursued pan-Arab goals.
After the defeat of the Arab states in the Six-Day War in 1967, his attitude towards Marxism-Leninism became radicalized , which in 1968 led to the establishment of the PFLP. He was in charge of this until 2000. The PFLP, which is a member of the PLO , tried to achieve the liberation of Palestine through military force and terrorist commando actions. In the late 1960s and 1970s she was best known for her airplane hijackings.
George Habasch resigned from his role as General Secretary of the PFLP in 2000 for health reasons.
Habasch had been married to a cousin, Hilda Habasch, since 1961, with whom he had two daughters who were born in Damascus and Jerusalem.
