George Alexander Eugene Douglas Haig, 2nd Earl Haig , OBE , RSA (born March 15, 1918 in London - † July 9, 2009 in Melrose , Roxburghshire ) was a British peer , politician and landscape painter.

life and career

Haig was the only son of British Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig . He attended Stowe School and studied at Christ Church College of Oxford University , where 1939 he concluding Bachelor of Arts (BA) and after the war the conclusion of Master of Arts acquired (MA).

In January 1928, at the age of only nine, he inherited his father's titles of nobility. His courtesy title Viscount Dawick he kept to the extent that he was called in the family and by his friends Dawyck Haig. A hereditary seat in the House of Lords was associated with his nobility titles . He held this until 1999, when the House of Lords Act 1999 abolished his right to inheritance to a seat in parliament.

During World War II he served with the Royal Scots Grays . He achieved the rank of captain. As a prisoner of war , he was temporarily interned in officers' camp IV-C at Colditz Castle.

After the war he started a career as a landscape painter. In 1951 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), and later a member of the Royal Scottish Academy . He also worked for veteran charities and was Chairman of the British Legion in Scotland from 1962 to 1965 . Between 1952 and 1967 he was Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Roxburghshire and Berwickshire . He was a member of the Royal Company of Archers . In 1966 he was accepted as an officer in the Order of the British Empire (OBE). From 1967 to 1970 he was Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of Berwickshire. In 1977 he was Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Ettrick, Lauderdale and Roxburghshire. In 1977 he was inducted into the Order of Saint John .

He wrote his autobiography , My Father's Son , which was published in 2000.
