George Henry Chase

George Henry Chase (born June 13, 1874 in Lynn, Massachusetts , † February 2, 1952 in Cambridge, Massachusetts ) was an American classical archaeologist .

Life

Georg Henry Chase studied at Harvard University , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1896 and his master's degree in 1897 . From 1896 to 1898 he stayed at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and directed the excavations at the Heraion of Argos . He achieved his doctorate in 1900 at Harvard with a dissertation on Greek shield painting.

After graduation, Chase worked for a short time as a master's at St. Mark's School in Southborough (Massachusetts) before he was hired as a lecturer at Harvard University in 1901 . In 1906 he was appointed assistant professor . In 1908 he married and cataloged the vase collection of James Loeb on his behalf. After participating in the excavations in Sardis in 1914 , he was appointed John E. Hudson Professor of Archeology in 1916 . From 1925 to 1939 he worked as dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences , from 1939 until his retirement on July 1, 1945 as dean of the university. In this position he represented the University President James Bryant Conant during his deployment in World War II .

In his research, Chase devoted himself to ancient vase painting and sculpture. He published catalogs of the Arretinian vases ( James Loeb Collection , Museum of Fine Arts, Boston ) and edited the eighth fascicle ( Fogg Art Museum , Gallatin Collection) for the Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum USA .

Chase was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1912. In 1929 he was accepted into the American Philosophical Society .
