George Konell

George Konell (born June 6, 1912 in Berlin , † May 17, 1991 in Trostberg ) was a German writer .

He lived and worked in Wiesbaden for many years , and his extensive work, which consisted of prose, poetry, drama and travel literature, was published both during his lifetime and after his death. He found his final resting place in the Südfriedhof in Wiesbaden.

During his lifetime, Konell published numerous of his texts in the feature pages of a wide variety of newspapers and magazines, many of them in publications in the Rhine-Main area and especially in the Hessian state capital Wiesbaden.

In addition, he and the Karlsruhe graphic artist Egon Plamper (1913–1982) presented two monographs on the cultural cities of Heidelberg and Wiesbaden. With Mr. Orphil, the cock of Chaumes-en-Brie. A French legend published a literary work by Konell in book form.

His work also extends to poetry and drama. He was a well-known author of plays for children, which are played, for example, as part of the Dossenheim puppet shows that he founded .

To ensure the publication of his work after his death in 1991, and a way to a publication to offer other writers, called his widow and executor Ilse Konell (1919-2012) in 1999, the Orphil publishing to life up to her Death existed in 2012.

George Konell Awards

In memory of George Konell, his widow Ilse Konell donated several literary prizes in cooperation with the state capital Wiesbaden.

  • George Konell Prize and George Konell Prize : The George Konell Prize of the state capital Wiesbaden is awarded every 2 years for a complete literary work or a first literary publication by an author. The artists must have their permanent residence in Hesse . The prize is endowed with prize money of 5000 euros. The winners are selected by a jury, each of which is used for two award ceremonies. The George Konell Prize, endowed with 500 euros, is awarded every two years to a student for a prose text. A work is expected that shows a confident, sensitive and creative use of the German language. There are no content requirements. A jury decides on the awarding of the award every two years.
  • Wiesbaden Poetry Prize Orphil and Orphil Debut Prize : The Wiesbaden Poetry Prize Orphil , endowed with 10,000 euros , was first awarded on the occasion of the poet's 100th birthday in 2012 and will be awarded every two years by the state capital Wiesbaden in cooperation with hr2-Kultur. George Konell called the iron rooster on the town halls of France, which for him embodied the song of the singer Orpheus as well as the ideals of the French Revolution, Orphil. The literary prize is awarded to poets whose works take a stand and know how to oppose political and stylistic fashions. An independent jury, consisting of the critic and editor Michael Braun, the literary critic Alf Mentzer from the Hessischer Rundfunk and the writer Silke Scheuermann, selects the winners.

The jury will also award the Orphil Debut Prize endowed with 2,500 euros.
