Ilse Konell (born November 5, 1919 in Oederan as Ilse Helene Schmeißer ; † September 17, 2012 in Mölln ) was a German literary patron .

Life

From 1955 Ilse Konell lived with her husband, the poet George Konell , in Wiesbaden , later also in Wyk on the North Sea island of Föhr and in Niebüll in North Frisia . After the death of her husband, she decided to promote literature in Wiesbaden as a patron and publisher. She wanted to keep the work of her husband alive in the public consciousness and at the same time support the work of freelance writers, whose existential needs she knew from her own experience.

Ilse Konell maintained numerous contacts with other German cultural workers, including the writer Johannes Mario Simmel and the actor Klaus Maria Brandauer . She died in 2012 at the age of 92 in Mölln, where her last years lived.

Ilse Konell is buried next to her husband in the Wiesbaden Südfriedhof .

Prize foundations

In memory of her husband's literary work, Ilse Konell donated several literary prizes in cooperation with the state capital Wiesbaden.

George Konell Prize and George Konell Prize

The George Konell Prize of the state capital Wiesbaden is awarded every 2 years for a complete literary work or a first literary publication by an author. The artists must have their permanent residence in Hesse . The prize is endowed with prize money of 5,000 euros. The winners are selected by a jury, each of which is used for two award ceremonies.

The George Konell Prize, endowed with 500 euros, is awarded every two years to a student for a prose text. A work is expected that shows a confident, sensitive and creative use of the German language. There are no content requirements. A jury decides on the awarding of the award every two years.

Wiesbaden Orphil Poetry Prize and Orphil Debut Prize

The Wiesbaden Poetry Prize Orphil , endowed with 10,000 euros , was first awarded on the occasion of the poet's 100th birthday in 2012 and will in future be awarded every two years by the state capital Wiesbaden in cooperation with hr2-Kultur. George Konell called the iron rooster on the town halls of France, which for him embodied the song of the singer Orpheus as well as the ideals of the French Revolution, Orphil. The literary prize is awarded to poets whose works take a stand and know how to oppose political and stylistic fashions. An independent jury, consisting of the critic and editor Michael Braun , the literary critic Alf Mentzer from the Hessischer Rundfunk and the writer Silke Scheuermann , selects the winners.

The jury will also award the Orphil Debut Prize endowed with 2,500 euros.

Working as a publisher

In order to ensure the publication of George Konell's works after his death in 1991, Ilse Konell founded the Orphil publishing house in Niebüll in 1999, which continued until her death in 2012. As her husband's estate administrator, she edited all of the publisher's publications herself. In 2011 she published her autobiography The Poet's Wife: Memoirs of a Redhead .
