George Lynch (racing driver)

George John Lynch (born June 20, 1918 in Miles City , Montana , USA ; † May 7, 1997 in Los Angeles , California , (USA)) was an American racing car driver.

Career

Lynch grew up on his grandparents' farm after his parents divorced. Between 1935 and 1957 he mainly drove midget and sprint car races, some of which he won, but was also noticeable for his aggressiveness. His career was interrupted by his war deployment in the Pacific between 1944 and 1946.

The high point of his racing career was his participation in the Indianapolis 500 in 1949 , where he qualified eighth, but was already out on the second lap due to an accident. In 1950 and 1951 he could not qualify for the race. After that, he continued to drive midget and stock car races and also tried his hand at NASCAR . In 1957 he retired from racing.

After his retirement, he lived in Southern California and worked as an auto mechanic , fisherman and ambassador for his sport. He was married five times and had four children. He died in 1997 as a result of Alzheimer's disease .
