At the age of 18, he moved to Colorado with his older brother Augustus . Augustus Bourquin successfully searched for gold and became a city councilor in Aspen while his brother moved on to the Montana Territory . There he married Mary Ratigan in 1891, with whom he had three sons. He completed his training as a lawyer in 1894 and opened a private practice in Helena . From 1899 Bourquin was then resident in Butte as a lawyer . From 1905 to 1909 he served as a district judge on the Court of Silver Bow County .
On February 13, 1912 Bourquin was appointed by President Taft to succeed the resigned Carl L. Rasch as a judge at the United States District Court for the District of Montana . After confirmation by the US Senate on March 8 of the same year, he was able to take office immediately. On January 9, 1934, he switched to senior status and thus effectively retired. Wheeler with 29:70 percent of the vote. He died on November 15, 1958 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, his home state.
