George Reed (musician)

George Reed (* 1922 in Coal County , West Virginia ; † 9. October 2011 in Elmira , New York ) was an American jazz - drummer and singer .

Live and act

Reed grew up in Harlem, New York, near the Savoy Ballroom ; the Basie musician Jo Jones and Freddie Green were his early mentors. In the course of his career he played a. a. with Charlie Parker , Red Allen , Marian McPartland , Joe Venuti , Buddy Tate and Bertha Hope . In 1970 he toured Europe in the all-star formation Saints and Sinners around Vic Dickenson and Red Richards . As a drummer and singer he played in his later years with the swing and dance band Lindy Hop Heaven and performed frequently at the Green Pastures jazz club in Elmira, where he had lived since 1990 and was a mentor for younger jazz musicians. In the 2000s he had a trio with Jeff Barone (guitar) and Ron Oswanski (organ). Reed, who was active as a musician until 2010, died in October 2011 at the age of 89 in the Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira.
