George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough (born December 27, 1793 in Hurst, Berkshire, † July 1, 1857 in Blenheim Palace , Woodstock) was a British nobleman and politician.

Life

He was born in 1793 under the name George Spencer, the eldest son of George Spencer-Churchill, 5th Duke of Marlborough , and his wife Lady Susan Stewart at the Bill Hill country house in Hurst, Berkshire . In 1817 his father added the family name to "Spencer-Churchill". As apparent marriage of his father led from 1793 to 1817 the courtesy title Earl of Sunderland and from 1817 to 1840 the courtesy title Marquess of Blandford .

He attended from 1805 to 1811, the Eton College and then studied until 1818 at the Christ Church College of Oxford University . After completing his studies, he was elected to the British House of Commons and was there MP for the boroughs of Chippenham (1818-1820) and Woodstock (1826-1835 and 1838-1840). In parliament he was a member of the Conservative Party . When his father died in 1840, he inherited his title of nobility as 6th Duke of Marlborough , thereby becoming a member of the House of Lords and leaving the House of Commons.

From 1842 to 1857 he also held the office of Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire .

Marriages and offspring

From an extramarital relationship with his second cousin on his father's side, Harriet Caroline Octavia Spencer (1798–1831), wife of Karl Theodor von Westerholt (1795–1863) in 1819 , he had an illegitimate daughter:

  • Susan Harriett Elizabeth Churchill (1818–1887) ⚭ 1837 Aimé Timothée Cuénod.

Later was married three times. In his first marriage in 1819 he married his maternal cousin Lady Jane Stewart (1798-1844), a daughter of George Stewart, 8th Earl of Galloway . From this marriage there were four children:

In his second marriage he married in 1846 the Hon. Charlotte Augusta Flower (1818-1850), a daughter of Henry Flower, 4th Viscount Ashbrook . He had two children with her:

  • Lord Almeric Athelstan Spencer-Churchill (1847-1856);
  • Lady Clementina Augusta Spencer-Churchill (1847–1886) ⚭ (1) 1866 John Pratt, 3rd Marquess Camden , ⚭ (2) 1876 Captain Philip Green.

In his third marriage in 1851 he married his maternal cousin Jane Francis Clinton Stewart (1817–1897), with whom he had a son:

  • Lord Edward Spencer-Churchill (1853-1911).
