William James Myers (born April 16, 1937 in Detroit , Michigan , † February 16, 2017 in Cocoa Beach , Florida ) was an American wrestler . He became known mainly at the then market leader World Wrestling Federation under the ring name George "The Animal" Steele . Steele is a member of the WWE Hall of Fame .
Career
Before wrestling
Myers studied at Michigan State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science. He received his master’s degree from Central Michigan University. James Myers became the gymnastics teacher and football team coach at Madison High School in Michigan . He coached the team for 25 years, including the last twelve as head coach.
Wrestling
Myers' career began in 1960. First he fought with a mask to avoid being recognized as a wrestler by his students and made a name for himself under the ring name The Student . When he got the chance a few times with WWF Champion Bruno Sammartino to get in the ring, it changed his gimmick in George "The Animal" Steele , because you do not masked wrestler as Sammartino Tinos wanted opponents. The character of George Steele was that of a "dumb savage" developed back on the animal primal instincts, but who had enormous strength and resistance . Fans loved the brawls between Myers and Sammartino, and he soon got into WWF. When Vince McMahon took over WWF from his father, he made Myers from the villain he always was to the slightly "eccentric" fan favorite (he now had a green tongue and bit the cushions in the corners of the ring) and wrote it in a long one Feud with Randy Savage . In the late 1980s, Steele quit wrestling for health reasons, starred in a film (Ed Wood) and worked behind the scenes for the WWF. In 1997 he returned briefly to the cameras as part of the Oddities group and was also traveling independently at the time. After that, Myers resigned from wrestling entirely. He was present at the Old School edition of Raw and helped Kofi Kingston to defeat David Otunga.
