George Telek

George Mamua Telek , MBE (* 1959 in Raluana on the island of New Britain ) is a singer from Papua New Guinea .

George Telek belongs to the indigenous people of the Tolai and is one of the most famous artists of Melanesia ; he sings in his mother tongue Kuanua as well as in the Creole language Tok Pisin . Many of his songs contain three-part harmonies from the music of the Tolai.

biography

George Telek began his career in the 1970s as a singer in music groups in his home village Raluana near Rabaul on the island of New Britain (New Britain, formerly Neupommern). At the end of the 1970s, he became so popular with the Molachs Revival Band he founded that they were invited to perform in the capital Port Moresby . In the 1980s he celebrated great success with the band Painim Wok outside of New Guinea.

His debut album Telek won the " ARIA Music Awards " in Australia in 1997 in the Best World Music Album category .

After recording his second solo album Serious Tam in England in Peter Gabriel's studios , he toured various countries in Europe and the USA, performing in Seattle at a WOMAD festival in front of around 20,000 listeners.

George Telek is married with seven children.
