George Thurland Prior

George Thurland Prior (born December 16, 1862 in Oxford , † March 8, 1936 ) was a British mineralogist , known for the further development of the classification of meteorites by Gustav Rose .

Prior studied chemistry and physics at Oxford University (Magdalen College) with degrees in 1885 and 1886. From 1887 he was at the British Museum in the Department of Mineralogy (now the Natural History Museum ) and was 1909 to 1927 Keeper for Mineralogy. At first he dealt with chemical mineral analysis, later with meteorites.

In 1905 he received a D. Sc. in Oxford.

He was a Fellow of the Royal Society (1912). In 1927 he received the Murchison Medal . Prior Island and Mount Prior are named after him in Antarctica .
