George William Drory

George William Drory (born January 10, 1803 in Colchester , † July 19, 1879 in Ghent ) was a British engineer and gas works entrepreneur .

George William Drory worked from 1826 for the Imperial Continental Gas Association , which was founded in London in 1824, and soon became chief engineer and inspector general for the company's European plants. In 1826 he began to build up the gas supply in Hanover and in 1828 in Berlin , each time with the support of his brother Leonard Drory . From 1835 he was director of the gas works in Ghent , where he settled and also worked as the Royal Hanoverian Consul .

In 1836 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society , in 1837 a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers .

From 1835 he was married to Stéphanie Maria van Aken from Gent (1811-1897), with whom he had five daughters. His daughter Stephanie (1842–1863) was married to the chemist August Kekulé , his daughter Elisabeth (* 1837) to the architect Adolphe Pauli .
