The Georgenäum

history

Emil Wilhelm von Georgii-Georgenau and his wife Sophie, b. Gardeners, donated the building to the city of Calw in 1868. It was inaugurated on May 27, 1871. It was open to all residents of Calw and at that time contained a library with 745 volumes, which formed the basis of the later city library, a women's work school, a commercial training debt and work rooms as well as a city apartment for the von Georgii-Georgenau family. The library stayed in the Georgenäum until 1998. After their move, the listed building was renovated and then used as the domicile of the Aurelius Boys' Choir in Calw or as a location for concerts and other events.

Building

During his Hermann Hesse scholarship in Calw in 2000, Wolfgang Schlüter wrote a text in which he describes the Georgenäum: “A [...] at the same time massive and elegant sandstone building with an exceptionally beautiful, steep roof pierced by dormer windows: a compact one from Each building from the Wilhelminian era, flanked by a statue in a niche, whose noble monumentality wanted to look almost exotic in all the confinement [...] as if a merchant who had come from afar wanted to set an example with a generous hand for that cultivated form of prosperity, which should no longer exist after the 19th century [...] like the houses from the Anker stone construction kit or like those " Faller houses" [...] "

The three-story Georgenäum was built from red sandstone; the two figures on the main front of the building were made by the sculptor Hermann Bach . They depict Friedrich Schiller as the embodiment of idealism and the economist Friedrich List as the representative of realism. The Georgenäum was supplemented by a fountain and a park.
