Emil Wilhelm von Georgii-Georgenau (born December 1, 1820 in Calw , † December 23, 1894 in Stuttgart ) was a German banker and philanthropist .

Life

Emil Wilhelm Georgi was a son of Eberhard Heinrich Georgii (1788–1852), the son of Eberhard Heinrich Georgii and his wife Wilhelmine (1793–1875), a daughter of the businessman Christoph Mose Doertenbach (1753–1819). He completed his school education in Calw and a commercial apprenticeship in Karlsruhe . Together with his father and Johann Georg Doertenbach and his son Georg Martin Doertenbach , he founded the Doertenbach & Cie. Banking business in Stuttgart in 1845. in the succession of the mining company of the same name founded in 1721 by Mose Doertenbach in Calw. In 1870 he was raised to the hereditary nobility by King Karl . This was accompanied by the change of the family name to von Georgii-Georgenau. Emil Wilhelm von Georgii- Georgenau renamed his estate to Georgenau in 1862 with royal approval .

The banking company in Stuttgart was successful. Emil Wilhelm von Georgii-Georgenau was the chairman of the supervisory board of the Eßlingen machine factory and a cotton mill in Eßlingen am Neckar . He was the Dutch consul general in Stuttgart until 1892.

Emil Wilhelm von Georgii-Georgenau married Sophie Emilie von Gärttner (1826–1892), a daughter of the Württemberg Finance Minister Karl von Gärttner , in 1847 . The marriage resulted in two sons, including the genealogist Eberhard Emil von Georgii-Georgenau , author of the Biographisch-Genealogischen Blätter. From and about Swabia (1879).

Foundations

In 1868 Emil Wilhelm von Georgii-Georgenau donated the Georgenäum to the city of Calw . This building housed a public library - the basis for the later city library -, a commercial training school, a women's work school and work rooms. It was inaugurated in 1871.

He founded the “Von Georgii Georgenau Foundation” in 1872 in Strasbourg. Its aim was to promote knowledge of the German language and history among the Alsatian youth.

He donated the Waldensian garden near his model estate Georgenau near Möttlingen . This was supposed to remember the Waldensians who were expelled from their homeland and settled here.
