  3. From the foreword, pp. III – IV: “The biographical-genealogical sheets from and about Swabia, which I have the honor of presenting to the public, are based on fragmentary records that I have made in various archives and libraries over the course of several years of other studies made and collected, and were originally in no way intended to appear in front of a larger audience. It was only after the material, contrary to expectations, had accumulated under the palm of the hand and, thanks to the friendly courtesy of many families, accumulated ever richer, often previously unprinted, documentary material, could the thought of publication arise.
Most of the individual families described in these pages have been resident in what is now Württemberg for centuries, only a few of them immigrating to Swabia from abroad only at a later date. It goes without saying that in this first series only a part of the Swabian families worth mentioning could be dealt with, just as the subject matter was presented, sometimes by chance circumstances; But even this fragment shows the Württemberg resident with pride what a rich number of important and memorable theologians, politicians, military officers, lawyers, state officials, merchants, doctors and naturalists, writers, poets and artists his little fatherland produced in just a few centuries. The biographies could mostly only be sketches given the moderate space to which they were to be restricted. "
