The Aurelius Sängerknaben Calw are a German boys' choir that was founded in 1983 by Hans-Jörg Kalmbach in Calw .

Today the choir is one of the most important boys' choirs in Germany. Bernhard Kugler has been the artistic director since 2008, succeeding Johannes Sorg, who was in charge from 2001 to 2007.

The repertoire of the Aurelius Boys' Choir in Calw encompasses sacred and secular choral music in a very broad spectrum. As a mixed choir, the singers perform regularly with oratorios and a cappella programs.

The choir has often been under the direction of well-known conductors such as Claudio Abbado , Herbert Blomstedt , Pierre Boulez , Sylvain Cambreling , Carl St. Clair , Michael Gielen or Krzysztof Penderecki . The major orchestras with which the choir has worked include the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , the Vienna Philharmonic , the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Staatskapelle Berlin .

In addition to their choir work, members of the Aurelius Boys' Choir also perform successfully as soloists: singers from the ranks of the choir took on roles such as Miles in Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw , the Shepherd in Giacomo Puccini's Tosca , and Fjodor in Modest Mussorgski's Boris Godunow , the Son of Macduff in Ernest Bloch's Macbeth or that of the Shepherd in Richard Wagner's Tannhauser , as well as several times the trio in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte .

The Calw soloists have made regular guest appearances in major German theaters, including the Berlin State Opera , the Komische Oper Berlin , the Frankfurt Opera , the Württemberg State Theater Stuttgart , the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, the Würzburg Mozart Festival or the Ludwigsburg Palace Festival , as well as at well-known international ones Stages like those in Lisbon, Madrid, Nice, Strasbourg and Toulouse.

The choir boys do not live in a boarding school, as is often the case with other boys' choirs, but with their families and attend regular public schools. The choir is affiliated with the city music school in Calw and is financially supported by the city of Calw and various sponsors.

The home of the Choir Boys in Calw has been the so-called Georgenäum since 1999 . The building was named after the Dutch Consul General for Württemberg, Emil Wilhelm von Georgii-Georgenau , who donated the house in 1871 as a library for young people.

The name Aurelius refers to Aurelius von Riditio , an early patron of the Hirsau Monastery . In the Middle Ages, the monastery was one of the most important and powerful in southwest Germany. Hirsau is now a district of Calw.
