Georges Chastellain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georges Chastellain (* 1405 in Ghent , † March 20, 1475 in Neuss ) was a Flemish poet and chronicler of Central French at the Burgundian court of Philip the Good and Charles the Bold .

life and work

Chastellain studied in Leuven . In 1457 he became the adviser of Duke Philip the Good and rose to the position of recognized master of poetry and historiography at the Burgundian court (successor: Jean Molinet ). His contemporary Olivier de la Marche called him "la perle et l'étoile de tous les historiographes". In 1473 he was knighted by Charles the Bold during the feast of the Order of the Golden Fleece (but not accepted as a knight of the order). Chastellain, who had traveled a lot as a soldier, was nicknamed "The Adventurer" (L'Adventureux). He fell during the siege of Neuss . His extensive chronic and poetic work was edited by Joseph Kervyn de Lettenhove and, above all, has been intensively researched since around 1970.
