Georges Henri Maurice Pierret (born February 3, 1930 in Le Mans , Département Sarthe , † August 9, 2010 in Rennes ) was a French politician.

Life

After studying law and economics at the Collège Sainte-Croix in Caen and Rennes , Pierret first became Secretary General of the Department's Economic Development Committee ( Comité d'expansion économique de la Sarthe ) in 1955 and a year later of a committee for the expansion of the river Maine . In 1962 he became director of industrial promotion at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the Morbihan department .

Pierret's main political concern was to strengthen the regions in France. In 1967 he succeeded Joseph Martray as general secretary of the Comité d'étude et de liaisons des intérêts bretons ("Study and Liaison Committee of Breton Interests", CELIB), which, as a representative of the interests of the political, economic and cultural elite of Brittany, represented moderate demands for autonomy and decisive impetus for the later regionalization of France. During his tenure until 1975, Pierret u. a. consulted by the EEC commission on regional issues and was a member of the Conseil économique et social of the Republic of France in 1965/66 . In May 1968 he was part of the delegation that, under René Pleven's leadership, negotiated massive state investments in the future of Brittany with the Pompidou government.

Pierret also campaigned for a stronger position for the regions at the European level. He was instrumental in founding the Conference of the Peripheral Coastal Regions in Europe in Saint-Malo in 1973 and held the office of Secretary General of this conference until 1994. Together with Edgar Faure he founded the Assembly of the Regions of Europe and was its first general secretary from 1985 to 1992.

At his death in 2010, Pierret was unanimously called “un grand militant de la cause régionale et des Régions en Europe” or “a great defender of its [= der Bretagne] territory and [...] a brilliant advocate for the regional cause on our continent ” .
