Georges van Parys

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georges Eugène Emile van Parys (born June 7, 1902 in Paris , † January 28, 1971 there ) was an extremely creative, French film composer .

Life

Georges van Parys was the son of a textile manufacturer. Before joining music, van Parys studied law for a few semesters in his hometown of Paris . In 1924 van Parys began working as a freelance composer, initially as a pianist in the cabaret Chez Fyscher . On the piano he accompanied Lucienne Boyer and Arletty, among others . At this time he was already composing his first operettas , including Madame la comtesse and Lulu .

Van Parys began composing for the film for the first time in the late 1920s. At the beginning of his work in sound film he worked with René Clair and Luis Buñuel , but soon afterwards, until the end of the Second World War , had to be content with composing less important films. In 1946, Georges van Parys resumed his collaboration with Clair at Schweigen ist Gold . In the 50s and 60s, Georges van Parys became one of the most sought-after cinema composers in his country. An abundance of entertainment films, some of which have been produced at a high price, including high-profile cinema classics such as Caroline chérie, Goldhelm , Fanfan, der Husar , Die Schönen der Nacht , Madame de ... , The Maurizius Case, The Great Maneuver and The Wretched , were accompanied by his catchy compositions . His "floating, supple and flattering melodies testify to great elegance and eloquence without ever being flavourful or even vulgar."

Despite his intensive work for the cinema, Georges van Parys continued to find time for theatrical compositions. He wrote stage music for Fra Diavolo and La dame de chez Maxim's . The operetta Mademoiselle Virginie and the ballet Voulez-vous dansez avec moi? are van Parys works. He also composed chansons performed by Maurice Chevalier , Danielle Darrieux , Albert Préjean and Georges Brassens , among others , and wrote a large number of short film compositions for short films between 1945 and 1963. For some time, Georges van Parys was vice-president of the Société des auteurs, compositeurs et éditeurs de musique .

Georges van Parys became known to German television viewers in the 1960s when he wrote the film scores for the ZDF four-part series "Robinson Crusoe".

Georges van Parys died in Paris at the age of 68 and found his final resting place in the cemetery of Villiers-sur-Marne ( Département Val-de-Marne ).
