Georgios Chortatzis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georgios Chortatzis , also Chortatsis ( Greek Γεώργιος Χορτάτζης or Χορτάτσης , * around 1550 ; † around 1610 ) was a Greek playwright from Crete . Together with Vitsentzos Kornaros he is one of the most important representatives of the Cretan school of poetry under the Venetian rule in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

Life

From dedications of some of his works to Chaniotic notables, as well as from the author's extensive literary education, it can be inferred that Chortatzis belonged to a wealthy Cretan family, even if there are no precise details of relatives or place of residence. He also is mentioned in the following verses from the epic poem The dispute of Chandax and Rethemnos ( Greek Φιλονικία του Χάνδακος και του Ρεθέμνου ) the poet Marinos Tzanes Bunialis ( Greek Μαρίνος Τζάνες Μπουνιαλής , ca. 1620 - ca. 1685) of Rethymno :

"Ένα παιδί μου παλαιόν, οπού 'γεννήση θελα
kappa' εκείνο με πολλή τιμήν ήθελε με στολίση ·
Γεώργιον Χορτάκιον εκράζαν τ 'του όνομά
και την καμε πανώργιαν του με ζαχαρένια χείλη
μαζί με τον την Κατζάροπον άξιαν Ερωφίλη."

"An old child of mine that I was about to bear,
and that one should adorn me with great honor:
Georgios Chortakios, his name, they called
and performed his panoramas with sugar-sweet lips,
together with Katzaropos the dignified Erofili ."

Works

His most famous work is in Egypt playing tragedy Erofili (or Erophile , Ερωφίλη ). Other works are the comedy Katsourbos , Κατσούρμπος , and the pastoral drama Panoria or Gyparis , Πανώρια η Γύπαρις . The comedy Stathis , Στάθης , is also attributed to him. The production context of these works also includes interludes , short pieces of around 40 to 200 verses, which were performed between the acts or at banquets and Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata (1575), Giovan Andrea dell'Anguillara's translation of the Metamorfosi d'Ovidio ( 1561) and Giambattista Marinos Adone (1623) took suggestions. With his thematically and stylistically based on these and other Italian models, Georgios Chortatzis significantly influenced the development of modern Greek written language and literature.
